Writing and Grammar Fun for Students

Reading and writing are some of the most important things that you'll ever learn about. Can you imagine not being able to read, write, or understand what words mean? That would make things really hard! These skills are part of what's called the language arts. Your teachers and parents are teaching you language arts when they correct your grammar, ask you to read a book, or give you new vocabulary words. Because these are things that you'll need to know for the rest of your life, it's important that you study and practice what you're taught. There are a lot of activities you can do to help you become a better reader and writer, like online games about grammar or spelling, and a lot of them are fun, too.

Grammar

  • Grammar Blast: This fun game can help you and other kids who are in the second grade learn about grammar. Click this link to visit the page and then hit "Play!" to start the game.
  • Furious Frogs: Play this online frog game with as many as three other kids or against the computer and match the words to their antonyms.
  • Grammar Gorillas: Earn bananas for the gorillas by picking the correct part of speech to complete the sentence.
  • We've Got Two Legs (video): When you visit this page on the British Council website, watch the video and listen to the grammar chant, then play a game to see what you learned. You can also print out worksheets here to do later.
  • Eye on Idioms: Click this link to play a game that asks you to complete the sentence with the right idiom.

Vocabulary

  • Vocabulary Crossword Puzzle Game: By clicking this link, you will be able to read the clues that will help you to solve a vocabulary crossword puzzle.
  • Fun and Easy Vocabulary Activities: Kids in grades 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 can try out these games to help them learn new words. The more words you know, the better you'll be able to put your thoughts into words.
  • MatchIt Definitions: To play this game, just match the words with their definitions.
  • Brainy Words Tic-Tac-Toe (PDF): Ask your parents to print this page, then play tic-tac-toe by circling the words.

Spelling

Reading

  • The Wrong Name Game: Open this link and test your basic reading skills by clicking the animal that's been given the wrong name.
  • Cause and Effect: Use scoops of ice cream to help you understand cause and effect.
  • Book Activities for Grades 3 to 5: Try out these fun activities to help you understand more about the books you read.
  • Poetry Game for Kids: This is a fun game in which you answer questions after reading poetry.
  • Elements of a Story: By clicking this link, you'll be able to read and watch the animated story of Cinderella, which is followed by information about the parts that make up the story.
